The Genealogical Program

The Scandinavian Genealogical Society was formed on October 23, 1991 for people researching Scandinavian ancestry both in the "Old Country" and in the United States. The society is not officially a part of the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation but supports the work of the Foundation.

We may be able to help answer questions and perhaps find unknown family ties for researchers.

Our goals are:

Expanding the knowledge of persons interested in Scandinavian ancestry.

Exchanging ideas relating to genealogical practices and experiences.

Providing instruction topics of interest to members.

Locating reference material in area libraries.

Helping the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation establish a cultural center in Portland to house a genealogical research room.

Encouraging members to write Scandinavian articles for publication.

Encouraging interest in Scandinavian ancestry and heritage, (e.g., VASA, Sons of Norway, Northwest Danish Foundation).

The Scandinavian Genealogical Society will assist its members with family research. A resource file is being developed to help locate available resource material such as periodicals, articles and/or books useful for research. We encourage you to catalog your resources so that others will not have to duplicate work that you have already done. One of the reasons we created the society was to form an informational network among our members.

If you locate any Scandinavian materials, please consider sharing the location and/or copies with us to assist in compiling our resource file. The society holds eight meetings each year. We meet on the third Saturday of each month from 9am to noon, except June, July, August and December. We are currently meeting at Portland State University, Cramer Hall, in the Finnish Room. Meeting place may change from time to time!)

The Society maintains numerous genealogical research materials that we have available for sale.  The Society also puts on a series of lectures each year.  The year’s final lecture will be held on June 17.  For more information, visit the link below.
