   Nordic Business Council

The Nordic Business Council is a good chance to network with people interested in conducting business with Nordic countries.

 

Believe in the Wind: Vestas Senior Manager of Government Relations, Henry R. Tilghman, speaks to the Nordic Business Council about the rapid growth of wind power in the world. Vestas is a Danish company with its North American offices in Portland. It is the largest wind turbine company in the world.

   Nordic Business Afterhours

Join us for the first quarterly Nordic Business Afterhours, an informal afterhours gathering and open house at businesses around Portland that have a Nordic flair.

   Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival

This is Astoria's 42nd annual Midsummer festival. Highlights are Kerry Christensen, Alpine Yodeling Master, and Terhi Miikki-Broersma, Finlandia Foundation 2009 National Performer of the Year.

   Astoria Music Festival's 7th Annual Celebration

Over 100 professional instrumentalists, singers, dancers, and talented students will soon gather from throughout the country for ten festive days and nights in the Liberty Theater, the Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center, and in venues all around town.

From Beethoven’s Ninth and La Traviata to exciting New Music and Dance; from joyful Baroque Ballet to a classic Silent Film with Live Orchestra; from up-close Chamber Music to Fisher Poets and “Classics for Kids,” it’s a banquet for the senses.    Eugene Annual Midsommar/Sankt Hans Celebration

   "Current City" Features Scandinavia

Check out "Current City,"a series of radio documentaries inspired by Ivy Lin's travels to Scandinavia. Originally from Taipai, Taiwan, Ivy works at Wieden+Kennedy and has produced two documentaries about Portland's communities. She is a member of the Portland Cello Project.

   25th Season Shanghaied in Astoria Opens July 9

This locally written play is part-vaudeville, part-soap opera, and part 1950’s style Hollywood musical – all combined into a fun and entertaining look at traditional local cultural folklore.  What originated as a celebration of Astoria tradition has now become a tradition itself and you won’t want to miss it!

Nordic Dancing

   Norske Runddansere

Join Norske Runddansere for a friendly evening of dance every Monday evening, 7 -10 pm at the Friendship Masonic Hall, 5625 NE Alameda in Portland. Walk-in is $3 or a year of membership is $40. Scandinavian Dance Workshops

Norske Runddansere has a series of six Saturday dance workshops planned every other month through 2008. The intermediate dance workshops will feature guest teachers from the West Coast and an evening dance with live music to help set the new dances into your body memory.

   Leikarringen of Portland

Even more fun than eating lutefisk ... it's Scandinavian dancing! Leikarringen of Portland is a multi-age performing, "award winning," youth dance group sponsored by the Daughters of Norway and Norske Runddansere. Dancers begin at age 4 and gradually gain skills to move up into our intermediate and then to our advanced troupe. A family affair, with second and third generation dancers performing with our group. Multiple directors/instructors provide years of dance background and share a wealth of dances from all the Scandinavian countries.

   Leikarringen of Grieg Lodge

2009 Awards & Scholarships

 

   54th Lucia Court and Scholarship

The Scandinavian Heritage Foundation (SHF) is accepting applications for the 54th annual Oregon Lucia Court from young women of Danish, Faroese, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian or Swedish heritage between the ages of 16 and 22 (must be at least a junior in high school, unmarried and a citizen of the U.S.). An Oregon tradition since 1956, the Lucia, First Light of Christmas, program brings young women of Nordic heritage in touch with this beloved legend of Scandinavia, while offering them the opportunity to serve their community and receive a $1000 scholarship. Applications must be postmarked no later than November 5, 2009. Call the SHF office (503) 977-0275 or email shf@mindspring.com for an application.
