Classes

Since 1958 the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation has supported the teaching of Nordic languages and culture at Portland State University. The Foundation believes that language captures the spirit of a people and permits the entry into the heart and soul of a culture. Communication can be the key to a rewarding connetion with Scandinavian roots.

In addition to learning a language, students are exposed to a culture, customs and history of their particular country of interest. The instructors utilize audio visual materials, invite spearkers to recount events of the past and to describe the dynamic nature of present-day Scandinavia.

In addition to language classes at PSU we also offer the following:

Love Educational Outreach Program, classes geared for kids in a school or library setting explaining the history, geography, music, language and art of Scandinavia

Scandinavian Sampler at PSU, held one weekend a year, showcaseing lectures, panels and discussions on a variety of Scandinavian subjects.

Friday Night Lecture Series, A free event featuring a monthly lecture on varied subjects with refreshments following.

Cook & Eat, with monthly guest "chefs" showing how to make a variety of tasty dishes (samples follow the class).

Summer Language Camp for Kids, sponsored by the various clubs and offering language immersion in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish.
